Philosophy Slam for Kids

The new Philosophy Slam for Kids topic for this year will be announced on November 16th.  For those of you unfamiliar with the Philosophy Slam, here’s a quick description:

Each year, students are invited to ponder a philosophical question.  (Past questions have included “Which is More Powerful — Love or Hate?” and “What is the Meaning of Life?”)  After some time for reflection, the students’ thoughts are shared through essays, poems, songs, or art work.  Final projects are given to me at the end of January, and I send off all of our school’s entries to a team of judges.  The judges then select the “Most Philosophical 5th Grader (or 4th Grader or 3rd Grader) in America”.  Small monetary prizes are awarded, but the true prize is the learning that grows out of the process.

I’m going to plan a lunch discussion group for interested students at each grade level.  If you think your child would be interested in participating, let me know!
